Celebris GL6xxx Tech Tip for NT4.0 and Goldstar 8x CDROM

Problem Description

Problems playing audio CDs under NT4.0 with a Celebris GL6xxx system 
with a Goldstar 8x CDROM.
 
Problem is due to a conflict between the Goldstar 8x CD and the 
PIIXIDE driver from intel.  A limited number of production systems
were shipped with this configuration.

TechTip Summary

If you have a Celebris GL6xxx system with a Goldstar 8x CDROM under 
NT4.0 and have problems playing audio CDs, the reason is probably
due to a conflict between the Goldstar 8x CD and the PIIXIDE driver
from intel.  A limited number of production systems were shipped with
this configuration.

To get this working you need to switch back to the generic ATAPI 1.2
ide driver that comes NT4.0

It will be necessary to go into the control panel of NT4.0 and click
on SCSI devices, add the atapi 1.2 driver and then remove the piixide
driver and reboot your system. 

Solution

Replace the the PIIXIDE driver with the ATAPI 1.2 driver that is 
part of the NT4.0 kit.

Detailed Implementation Procedure

To remove the PIIXIDE drive and install the ATAPI 1.2
driver follow the below procedure:

1.Click on the "Start" button. 
2.Click on "Settings >". 
3.Click on the "Control Panel". 
4.Double-click on the "SCSI Adapters" icon. 

 INTEL PIIX PCI BUS MASTER IDE CONTROLLER"

Click on the "Add" button. 

A "Setup Message", consisting of a warning about adding SCSI 
adapters, will appear. This warning ends with the question
"Are you sure you want to add a SCSI adapter?" 

Click on the "OK" button. 

A "Select SCSI Adapter Option" window will appear. 

Click on the scroll down arrow to see the list of adapter choices. 
Scroll down to: 

"IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2) / DUAL CHANNEL PCI IDE" 

and select by clicking on this entry. 

Click on the "Install" button. 

A "Windows NT Setup" window will appear which will ask whether you
want to use the currently installed driver(s) or install
new one(s). 

Click on the "Current" button. 

The "SCSI Adapter Setup" window will appear. 

Click on the following entry to select it. 

"INTEL PIIX PCI BUS MASTER IDE CONTROLLER" 

After this entry is highlighted, click on the "Remove" button. 

A "Setup Message", consisting of a warning about removing SCSI 
adapters, will appear. This warning ends with the question
"Are you sure you want to remove a SCSI adapter?" 

Click on the "OK" button. 

Another "Setup Message" will appear. It reads as follows: 

"INTEL PIIX PCI BUS MASTER IDE CONTROLLER has been marked as a boot
device. Removing it may cause the system not to boot. Are you sure
 you want to remove the Adapter." 

Click on the "OK" button. 

On the "SCSI Adapter Setup" menu, click the "Close" button. 

Click on the "Close" button and exit the "Windows NT Setup" function
by clicking on the minimize button in the upper right
corner of the window or by clicking on the control-menu box in the
upper left corner and clicking "Close" from the pull-down
menu shown.

Reboot the system as follows: 

Click on the "Start" button, then click on "Shut Down". 

Click on "Restart the Computer?" 

Click on the "Yes" button. 

The system will now reboot with the correct SCSI/IDE drivers 
installed.
