Subj: TECHTIP: Problem with Maxtor 1.2GB EIDE and Windows NT 3.51 Celebris and Venturis Installing Windows NT 3.51 on Maxtor 1.2Gb E-IDE HDDs. PROBLEM: When installing Windows-NT 3.51 (WS/AS) onto the Maxtor 1.2Gb E-IDE HD, the system hangs at various locations; thus forcing a cold reboot. INSTRUCTIONS: The installation of Windows NT 3.51 is facilitated by copying the files from the I386 subdirectory on the CDROM to a subdirectory on the HD. The subdirectory on the HDD should be named I386. The new Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 (ATAPI.SYS) driver must be copied into the I386 subdirectory on the HD before beginning the installation of Windows NT 3.51 when using the Maxtor 1.2Gb HD. Procedure for creating BBS disk. 1. Download the file QJ00WNTJ.EXE from the BBS. 2. Create a subdirectory on your HD and copy QJ00WNTJ.EXE to it. 3. This is a self-extracting file--run it to uncompress. 4. Insert a blank, formatted, 1.44 diskette into drive A: 5. Change to the directory where you extracted the files and type: DOSIMAGE RESTORE TEMP.IMG A: Procedure to load new ATAPI.SYS driver. For a CDROM install, start at Step A. For a Network install, start at Step B. CD INSTALL A: Boot from the newly created diskette. Create a subdirectory on the Maxtor 1.2Gb HD called I386. Copy the files from the I386 subdirectory on the CDROM to the I386 subdirectory on the Maxtor 1.2Gb HD. Example: xcopy z:\i386\*.* c:\i386\*.* /s Next, copy the file ATAPI.SYS from the I386 subdirectory on the newly created diskette to the I386 subdirectory on the Maxtor 1.2Gb HD Example: copy a:\i386\atapi.sys c:\i386\*.* (You will be asked if you want to overwrite the existing file-answer yes) NETWORK INSTALL B: Before installing NT 3.51 from the Network, place the newly created diskette into drive A: and copy ATAPI.SYS to the Network drive that contains the I386 subdirectory. Example: copy A:\I386\ATAPI.SYS N:\I386\*.* (N: = network drive) C: Have three 1.44Mb floppies formatted and ready for the WinNT V3.51 install. Change to the C:\I386 subdirectory for an HD install or the network I386 subdirectory for a network install, and type: WINNT [ENTER] Follow the on-screen installation instructions until you reach the Windows NT Setup Screen. Then follow the instructions below. Procedure to install new CMD drivers A) If you want to install WINNT 3.51 and your CD-ROM is configured on the second channel, start from part A: B) If you already have Win NT 3.51 installed in the system, go to part B: PART A 1) In the Windows NT Workstation(Server) Setup Screen, choose Custom setup and skip detection. 2) Choose S for Specify Additional Device ; select "Other (Requires disk provided by a hardware manufacturer)" 3) Next, it will prompt you for the disk labeled Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk into Disk A:. ******* Insert the newly created diskette into drive A: ******* 4) Select the CMD CSA-640X IDE Driver. 5) Then continue the Win NT 3.51 installation. PART B 1) From the Program Manager, double click on "Windows NT Setup" in the Main group. 2) Select "Options/Add/Remove SCSI Adapters..." 3) Click on Add. 4) The "Select SCSI Adapter Option" dialog will appear; select "Other (Requires a disk from a hardware manufacturer)" from the "Adapter:" list box. 5) Next, the "Insert Diskette" dialogbox will appear; insert the newly created diskette into Drive A: and type "A:" into dialogbox. 6) Next, the "Select OEM Option" dialogbox will appear; select "CMD 64xx 32-Bit IDE Adapter" and click "OK." 7) Next the "Select SCSI Adapter Option" dialogbox will appear; click on the "Install" button in the dialogbox. 8) If installation is successful, the "SCSI Adapter Setup" dialogbox will reappear, and "CMD 64xx 32-Bit IDE Adapter" will be listed as an installed driver. 9) Reboot your system to load the CMD IDE driver. Verify that it is working properly.
