Hi,
It looked like I didn't send out the summary right in my earlier message.
Sorry for that.
My original problems were:
   1. Connecting an HP LaserJet 4 printer to a DEC 3000/300 through the
serial port (/dev/tty00) won't work except with filter ln03of,
   but ln03of doesn't support PostScript.
   2. Remote printing is denied.
For the first problem, the culprit turned out to be the cable.
(The fact that using the ln03of filter could print made me think that
the cable was correct, but it wasn't.) I had used an RS-232 cable, but
according to the printer's manual, the wiring should be
Printer (Male connector) Computer (Female connector)
1 Chassis Ground 1 Chassis Ground
       2 TD 3 RD
       3 RD 2 TD
       6 DSR 20 DTR
7 Sig Gnd 7 Sig Gnd
20 DTR 5 Clear to Send, 6 DSR
Note: Pins on the same line should be connected.
20 DTR on the printer side should be connected to both 5 and 6 on
      the computer side.
Before I rewired the RS-232 cable, I had tried the RS-232 cable with the
NULL MODEM adapter (available in the store). But that didn't work
either. (Probably because in the NULL MODEM adapter, the 5 is not
connected with 6 on the computer side.)
Here's the printcap entry:
lp|lp0|lp2:\
        :af=/usr/adm/lpacct:\
        :br#38400:\
        :ct=dev:\
        :fc#0177777:\
        :fs#03:\
        :if=/usr/lbin/ln03rof:\
        :lf=/usr/adm/lperr:\
        :lp=/dev/tty00:\
        :mc#20:\
        :mx#0:\
        :of=/usr/lbin/ln03rof:\
        :pl#66:\
        :pw#80:\
        :rw:\
        :sh:\
        :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/hplaser:\
        :xc#0177777:\
        :xf=/usr/lbin/xf:\
        :xs#044000:
And the settings on the printer are:
     RS-232, XON/XOFF, 38400

For the second problem, Grzegorz Mucha told me that I should create a
/etc/hosts.lpd file which includes names of other computers that need
to print remotely. And that worked. (He also mentioned the cable wiring.)
