It appears that I was on the right track but was missing one minor
detail. Jim Palfreyman (jim_at_orac.ecc.tased.edu.au) pointed out the
following:
Remember also, that any running getty will use the old
entry in the gettydefs file. That is, either kill off
all running getty's or reboot the system to see your changes.
This is the piece I was missing. I'm fortunate enough to have another
Alpha that we use for development purposes. I made the change to its
gettydefs file and rebooted and, voila, the message came up. Thanks to
everyone who responded.
