System configuration:
    Alpha 3000/600
    64MB main memory
    OSF/1 V2.0
    Two tz87 drives
    NetWorker v2.2a
The problem:
Two tz87 tapes written with the above system have developed bad
spots that generate unrecoverable read errors several months after
the tapes were generated. We're trying to use NSR recover to read
files from the tapes. nsrd hangs trying to handle the read
errors. Cleaning tape has been tried. Switching drives has been
    tried.
The questions:
Why would two out of 14 tz87 tapes in our archive go bad? They
haven't been exposed to unusual environmental conditions or
otherwise abused. Is the tz87 technology reliable?
How can I recover as much data as possible from a tape with bad spot(s)?
Thanks,
