Hi People,

     A bit of background...
My company runs a database (Unidata) on a DEC System 5000/240.
We are looking to ditch this system soon in favour of alpha/oracle.
The Decsystem is at capacity at the moment. After looking at varouos
bits it looks like we can spend about £8K on upgrading the system
(more disk, memory, R4000 CPU, second PMAZ scsi channel).

     Heres some more background.

When we buy the alpha it looks like we will be getting one of those
newfangled 8200 systems with truckloads of memory etc.. and also a
     smaller alpha for testing/devel./backup purposes.

     Here's the question.

Instead of upgrading the 5000 (which will be dead in 6 months) can I
run the Unidata binaries on the Alpha. They are not massive, I doubt
they are anything like complicated (Unidata is a PICK simulator)
Obviuosly I can go for a recompile of the Unidata binaries using DEC
Migrate or similar but the vendor would charge us squillions to do
     this

Does anybody have any ideas? We cant really last another 6 months on
the current setup but we dont really want to fork out for an upgrade
to a machine that has only 6 months left init and it would be nice if
we could buy the alpha now and run the old app on it...

     Thanks in advance

     Iain
