A reply on this issue arrived in under half an hour - my thanks.
Simon Tardell <tardell_at_particle.kth.se> pointed out that suid
capability is disallowed in the kernel, and that a compiled wrapper
should be used. I have tracked down such a wrapper and will
now see if it does the job.
