whoami problems

Hi,

For a Alpha 255/300, DU4.0B:
When I login as myself (or other regular users do) and do a
"whoami" we get the correct response. eg:

>whoami
ponder
>

When logged in (directly to the console) as root
is gives a blank:

#whoami

#who am i
root ttyp2 Jun 12 10:48


The passwd file does not look corrupt and I don't know where else
to look. Any ideas?
