The new external drive was internally terminated.  I had to open it up and
remove the (very tiny) strap that enabled termination.  Everything now works!
Thanks for lots of replies, but nobody suggested this as a possibility (although 
improperly functioning EXTERNAL terminators were suggested!)

Lots of CAM SCSI errors removed.  As I said it is fixed now.
The wide disk is no longer terminated and everything is fine.
