First, I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestions... FWIW, I had
already tried most of the disklabel and MAKEDEV stuff, and that wasn't
what was wrong with the install...
Basically, the Digital UNIX 4.0d installation scripts cannot handle a
disk that reports a model name with spaces in it. In my case the model
name reported was:
    U1545 ST12550N
since these drives were originally for Unisys (bleh!) systems.
Unfortunately, there is NO workaround short of getting the drives
reprogrammed with the standard Seagate firmware (which I am getting
done...) In the meantime I've stuck an old Seagate 2.1GB Hawk drive in
the machine which seems to be working...
Again, thanks to everyone for their suggestions!
