Quite a few responses, thanks to all:
In order of decreasing frequency:
1. get lsof from
ftp://vic.cc.purdue.edu/pub/tools/unix/lsof
2. user fuser (can't, I'm on 4.0B, all I have is the C function call)
3. make sure you are not in the directory that you are attempting to
umount.
4. make sure you didn't su while in the directory and then attempt to
umount after moving up the directory tree.
