I didn't boot with the generic kernel. Didn't know that building 
the new kernel during installation of Open3d
did not involve changing the line for the
graphics adapter in /sys/conf/<machine> automatically. 
The previously used graphics controller was therefore 
still hard-wired  in the kernel. That's what caused the error.
