... both of whom suggested that I install OSFOBSOLETE425 (which
includes /usr/shlib/osf.1/libcurses.so, which fixes the problem
related to running the old 3.2c-built executable under 4.0d).
As for the other problem (the stack overflow and segmentation
fault when sending mail with the 4.0d-built executable), mabye
it's time to go crawl in a hole, or something. I had already
found *that* problem on my own before getting the suggestions
from ...
  Paul Yahnig <yahnig_at_GroupWise.Kean.Edu>
  Bob Parkinson <rwplists_at_omni.ac.uk>
... that I check to be sure that sendmail had been configured
correctly. Well, it was more than a configuration botch: It
turns out that the copy of /usr/sbin/sendmail on that system
was a zero-length file! Something obviously went dreadfully
wrong when I replaced the Digital-supplied version of sendmail
with the 8.8.8 release. Sigh; I'll have to poke around a bit
to figure out just how *that* happened. In any case, fetching
a fresh copy of the sendmail executable fixed that problem ...
Thanks to all who responded.
