Good Day Fellow Sys Admins -
Last Thursday I posed the following question.
==>
==> Hi Fellow Sys Admins -
==>
==> Approximately two years ago, the place where I am the sys admin
==> purchased two storageworks disk enclosures from DEC for the two
==> 4.0 GB disks they had purchased. I have since been told that DEC
==> no longer sells these, that you have to buy the disk AND the
==> enclosure that connects to the storage works socket in the
==> backplane. I have a call in to my DEC sales rep but thought I
==> would ask if any of you know of a third party sellor of these
==>  enclosures.
==>
==> Any body know of a sellor?

I contacted Mark and he had two in stock and was trying to
find two more for me.

==>
==>  Hi Kris,
==>
==> As you have discovered Digital discontinued the carrier approximately
==> 6 months ago. Do you require support for narrow or wide drives?
==> - I do have two narrow carriers in stock and have made a few calls
==> see if I can round up a couple more.
==>
==> Please give me a call and we can discuss further - 416-703-7545.

==>
==> Congratulations and welcome to the club of losers. ;-)
Yes, sometimes don't we feel like we are.
==>
==> I managed to buy 3rd party SW carriers from a firm called Exodata in
==> sweden (www.exodata.se), but DEC has appearently put in a great effort
==> to eliminate them from the 3rd party market. You might give them a
==> call and ask where they got theirs from or if they know about sources
==>  in the U.S.
I went to Exodata and they apparently no longer are DEC resellers.
They only advertised SUN products. I did not pursue them any further.
==>
==> Myself, I will probably scrap my SW shelves in favour of Andataco ESP
==> shelves in a not to distant future. They are really nice in terms of
==> features and robustness and cost about the same as comparable SW
==> shelves. Moreover, the ESP carriers cost much less than a comparable
==>  SW carriers.
I asked Erik to tell me more about the ESP shelves. That reply follows
his first message so that his messages are together.

==>
==> They come in both flavours - rackmount or piedestal. The rackmount
==> should fit in any 19" rack. We do not have any ESP shelves mounted in
==> Digital 19" racks and I don't know wether the small 2100 enclosures
==> have any restrictions (the ESP shelves are rather deep) so I can of
==> course not be 100% sure about it. We do have two clustered AS4000
==> mounted in a full-hight rack and a quick inspection tells me that the
==> ESP shelf indeed would fit in that rack.
==>
==> There are three things that really make me like andatacos shelves:
==>
==> * Dual power supplies are standard
==> * Every slot has a button for putting the disk on- and offline
==> * Inexpensive carriers (a carrier for a fast narrow disk costs about
==> $80, and a carrier for a wide/SCA disk costs only half of that.
==>
==> I think that there only are ESP racks for wide SCSI, which offers the
==> possibility to connect narrow disks, but you will need a wide
==> controller on the host side.

They sound interesting and worth investigating for the future when
DEC nolonger supports the 2100.

==>
==>  Kristin,
==>
==>    I ran into a similar problem. I had 2 2100's with a lot of empty disk
==> slots and a surplus of raw 4GB drives. DEC wouldn't sell me the cases.
==> We ended up buying a bunch of used cases from CPU Options -
==>
http://www.cpuoptions.com/
==>
==> You can also get new cases from the Newman Group -
==>
http://www.newman.com/
==>
==> I did find one interesting little problem with the used cases. I got 2
==> cases where the power connector on the ribbon cable was about a 1/4" longer
==> than others. The 4 GB drives wouldn't fit in the case with that power
==>  connector.
==>
==>    Anyhow, good luck,
==>
==>    Bryan
==>
This company, cpuoptions is the only reseller my DEC rep said
that he knew. The info he gave me was,
        CPUOPTIONS
        1-800-777-6567
They are only selling these until the 12th. I think that is what
he said in his voice mail.
