Thanks to Anthony Patchett, I have progressed a little further it seems
that following the firmware update the console comes up in serial mode.
I have attached my PC to the serial port and using hyperterminal I get
the following garbled messages which I have tidied up.
AlphaBIOS 5.66
Invalid NVRAM Data
The firmware has determined that the NVRAM data is invalid may cause
incorrect
booting installation of WindowsNT.
The firmware will attempt to restore the factory default values.

These messages are not neccessarily in this order, question does anybody
know the correct terminal settings to display the ARC console messages
correctly?
How can I change the console back to the graphics screen in ARC mode?
Below is the messages as diplayed on the screen.
