Well, I solved the problem. (and yes I do feel like an idiot)
It turns out, the problem was with the queue. We were routing the output
of the Alpha through a Windows NT server queue. This was essentially
desirable as it reduced management of multiple queues. Well, the NT queue
does _something_ to the job that causes the printer to hate it (thus
printing reams of PS codes). One more reason to curse M$ to the end of the
Earth. Fixed the DU queue to print directly to the JetDirect card, and
voila! Nice output.
Now to set this up as a filter. I'm off to give it a stab.
