Tru64 admins,
I have a question concerning the export of host information using NIS under
Digital Unix 4.0d. Being an avid O'Reilly fan, I use several of their books
for administration of Unix; in particular Managing NFS and NIS. According
to O'Reilly, hosts maps (hosts.byname, hosts.byaddr) derived from a source
hosts file replace the local hosts file (see Table 2-2. Summary of NIS
Maps). Now....according to Compaq, this is not true. Compaq claims that
the local host file is used first. Well... actually it refers to
/etc/svc.conf which dictates the order. I verified this by making a
reference to a host A in Host B's local host file using the host A's FDDI
interface then made a NIS host reference for Host A using its Ethernet
address. If I ping or telnet from Host B to Host A, then I address the
FDDI...so Compaq is right....Right????? Is this true for all flavors? Or am
I reading the section wrong!
