A number of people have commented that I should set the switch to 100/full,
which we have now done. I have also tried setting the ethernet port to
fastfd as the console mode. Something, probably inportant, that I left out
of the other message is that the network card in this machine is a DE504-BA
4 port 10/100. I have so far only tried port 0. I will be trying the
other ports today. I will also be trying to plug the card into the switch
in some different ways. We will also be trying to patch through to a Cisco
5500 in another room to see if going to that will remove the errors and
speed things.
The file I originally having problems with was a tar file. As I mentioned
above, the transfer would stop, reliably, at about 201 MB. Maybe a problem
with the file? I then found an apache log file that was 384 MB in
size. That file transferred fine. Then I tried a 1.2GB log file. Fine
also. I then gzipped the tar file and then it would transfer, with some
fits and starts during the transfer. Watching the transfer with netstat 1,
I would see the number of packets running about 6000 with from 0 to 7
errors per second. I would then watch on the other system and that one
would show the same numbers for packets, but no errors. That other machine
is plugged into the same switch as the DS20. (other machine, AlphaStation
500/500) The number of packets moving would go along at 2000-6000 per
second and then drop to 1, 2 ,20 packets per second for 3 to 6 seconds and
then start back up to the 2000-6000 per second level. I would do this a
number of times during the transfer. If any of this helps to shed light on
other things I should try, I'm willing to listen. It looks like I have a
few days of trying things here to get this resolved. Again, any thoughts
and help appreciated.
