Thanks to Martin Moore of Compaq.
There was a bug in 4.0D, fixed in V4.0f and higher, and in patch kits for earlier versions. The fix is supposed to be in 4.0d patch kit 3 (and later). The last 4.0d patch kit (#9) is available from
(
http://ftp.support.compaq.com/public/unix/v4.0d/).
Of course a better solution is to upgrade.
