Im having problems with vrestore on a ES40 running Tru64 5.1. The tape
drive is an AIT 50. I do backups with a script file that basically
does the following:
mt online
mt fsf <some number>
back up each fileset.
The script checks to see if the mt fsf command completed successfully
and if so backs up the file sets. If not it outputs an error message
and aborts. Everything has gone ok except for the last couple of
months. Once in a while as in this past weekend it wont read the tape.
 I get the message
vrestore: unable to use save-set; invalid or corrupt format
************* PROGRAM ABORT **************
vrestore: can't obtain fileset attributes
I tried another tape and it did the same thing. I finally went back to
the full dump which is done the first friday of every month and it reads
it fine. I would normally think that the tape is probably corrupt even
though there are two different tapes with this problem except for the
following info. When I look at the output of vrestore it looks normal.
It appears to have completed normal. If I look at /etc/vdumpdates
file, the file is updated with the dump level and date it was dumped so
that it appears to have completed normally. There are probably around
100 filesets on the tape and it wont even read the first one. I cleaned
the tape drive but it still gives me the errors. Anyone have any ideas
about why this would happen intermittently?
thanks,
darryl
