This program will become mandatory for all federal government PC purchases this year. Since there is a sizable potential for energy cost savings, many private companies are also expected to adopt the standard in 1994, making energy efficient PCs the standard for mainstream PC computing by midyear. Digital's new, energy efficient DECpc LPv+ personal computer family is an enhancement of the successful DECpc LPv family and replaces all its variants. The new family features advanced power management (APM), utlizing the i486 SL enhanced processors from Intel, and offers the power management features previously seen only in portable PCs. Some of the chief DECpc LPv+ features: o Same price as the DECpc LPv family. o Fully compliant with Energy Star program. o Less than 30 W power consumption in sleep mode. o Slimline, ergonomic, low profile enclosure. o Local bus graphics from S3 (onboard 805 at 17 M Winmarks). o Upgradable within the i486 SL enhanced processor family (sx, dx, dx). o Three ISA slots. o Four storage bays. o 145 W power supply with energy management features. o Serial port with 16550 UART support. BENEFITS The EPA estimates that 40 percent of PC users leave their computers on nights and weekends. A typical system can use up 145 W of power even when inactive. A single system meeting Energy Star requirements can save up to 1500 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, creating a savings of up to $50 per year. Systems that meet Energy Star guidelines go into sleep mode after a period of inactivity, automatically reducing power consumption to 30 W or less for each major component (system box and monitor) and to 60 W for the entire system. The DECpc LPv+ family power consumption in sleep mode is less than half this standard, coming in at less than 30 W of power consumption for the entire system.
