Digital's Optimized Windows NT Driver for
			PowerStorm 4D10T Graphics Options
			Release Date: 05/29/98
			Release Version: V2.0b

Please read this document prior to installing the Display Driver.

This document describes the Windows NT Display Driver for PowerStorm 4D10T (3Dlabs Permedia P2 based board) 4MB & 8MB options for Digital's Alpha & Intel platforms.

1. This version of the display driver is a Windows NT only driver for Digital's Alpha and Intel platforms. It does not contain any Windows 95 or Windows 98 support.

The following functionality is supported:
- Full support for OpenGL acceleration
- Full support for GDI
- Hardware support for major DirectDraw functionality (e.g. YUV colorspace conversion, ColorKey, Stretch Blt).
- Full support for 2D multihead (see section 7)
- Full support for 3D multihead on Alpha (see section 7)
- Support for VideoIN (see section 2)
- Microsoft WHQL Certification

2. The PowerStorm 4D10T supports VideoIN. In order to activate the VideoIN functionality, the VideoIN driver needs to be installed separately. The VideoIN driver is NOT contained as a part of the display driver. The VideoIN is supported in the below two modes:

- On a single PowerStorm 4D10T device
- On any graphics device (as a Display) and PowerStorm 4D10T as a VideoIN only device (for demonstration purposes)

Please refer to the VideoIN installation and release notes.

4. System Requirements

Base Platform: Digital's Alpha & Intel platforms
OS Version: Microsoft Windows NT V4.0 SP3

5. Installation

To install the driver, please perform the following steps:

- Log in as an administrator or as a user who has administrative privilege to change the display settings.
- Start the "Display" applet by right-clicking "Desktop" and selecting "Properties". A window titled "Display Properties" will appear.
- Click the "Settings" tab. This lists display configuration, like "Color Palette", "Font Size", and so on.
- Press the "Display Type" button. A new window titled "Display Type" will appear.
- Press the "Change..." button in this window. A new window titled "Change Display" will appear.
- Press the "Have Disk..." button in this window. A window titled "Install from Disk" will appear.
- Specify the path(Net or floppy) where the unzipped files are and press "OK". The "Change Display" window will appear with two sub-windows. Press "OK".
- Then follow the instructions and quit the control panel applet.
- When asked if you want to restart the machine press "Yes"(or "No" to delay shutdown). The new settings will take effect at next reboot.
- After reboot, you can select the right resolution suitable for your needs.

6. Display Properties panel

The Display properties panel ("ntpanel.dll") is provided to help you tune your display driver. However, we strongly recommend that you choose the system defaults. This applet is integrated into the Display Properties in the Desktop.

- To start the optional tuning applet: Right-click on the "Desktop" and select Properties. A window titled "Display Properties" will appear on the Desktop. Click on the "4D10T" tab and customize the settings.

Once you have chosen the settings:

- Select the "OK" button to confirm your selection. If you selected a boot option parameter, a new dialog box will ask if you would like to reboot.

- Select "Yes" to restart your machine. The new setting will only take effect on the next reboot.

7. Multihead

The PowerStorm 4D10T supports homogenous 2D multihead on both Alpha and Intel platforms. It also supports homogenous 3D multihead only on Alpha platforms. You can have two or more 8MB PowerStorm 4D10T devices on a system. Similarly, you can have two or more 4MB PowerStorm 4D10T devices on a system. There is no support for heterogeneous multihead (i.e. mixing 4MB and 8MB devices on the same system even though it may seem to work).

To enable Multihead, perform the following steps:

- Plug in the PowerStorm 4D10T's into the respective PCI slots.
- Disable VGA on all but one of the PowerStorm 4D10T's. The card which has VGA enabled will be the NT console. This is where the NT boot will occur.
- Once NT boots, it is likely that you will see Graphics on only one card. It is also likely that the card that has VGA enabled is not the card that displays the Graphics. This is because the card that is plugged into the highest numbered PCI slot gets the priority to display the Graphics.
- After logging in, go to Display Properties and adjust the resolution to enable Multihead.

OpenGL applications will go through hardware acceleration in multihead mode provided the application window size is less than the size of one full screen. Note: Hardware acceleration is available even if the application window is split between two heads or on either head.

Supported Configurations:

- Digital Personal Workstation 300/333i	- On-board 4MB P2 + upto 2 4MB PowerStorm 4D10Ts (only 2D)

- Digital Personal Workstation 300/333i	- On-board 8MB P2 + upto 2 8MB PowerStorm 4D10Ts (only 2D)

- Digital Personal Workstation 500- 600a - Upto 3 4MB PowerStorm 4D10Ts

- Digital Personal Workstation 500- 600a - Upto 3 8MB PowerStorm 4D10Ts
