-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Problem Desciption -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Problem Desc : CMD controller will crash and loose the CDROM icon and force the machine into compatability mode. Notification of current MDS workaround. CMD Crash CDROM Restore Note: This fix will not work if the master boot record has been modified. Status can be checked by looking at the preformance tab of device manager, where it also says that the C drive is in compatability mode. Additionally if the machine went into compatability mode for another reason such as a conflict, virus, etc... the machine may return to compatability mode after being restarted. To take the machine out of compatability mode without reinstalling WIN95: START, RUN, type REGEDIT. EDIT, FIND, type NOIDE When the search stops the path you should see on the left is: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Vxd/IOS" and on the right NOIDE should be highlighted. MAKE VERY SURE ! If so, hit the delete key on the key board. Close REGEDIT. START, RUN, type SYSEDIT. Add to CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE=C:\CMD640X2.SYS /L /A33 Save, exit SYSEDIT, shutdown and reboot. DISCLAIMER The registry editor is the most dangerous place you can go in WIN95, a screw up here can render the system inoperable!!!!!! Make sure the customer realizes this is an extremely advanced area and should not be explored by the novice. ****** USE EXTREME CAUTION ****** Verify CDROM icon is present in MY COMPUTER. This fix will change the drive letter to D. Correct drive letter to L, or reinstall all CDROM software. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Additionally a .REG file has been created by Rex Williams which allows the user to double click the file and the .REG association will automatically update the registry. CMDFix.REG: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/VxD/IOS] "Start"=hex:00 "StaticVxD"="*IOS" "NoIDE"=hex:00
