UPDATING BIOS ON A Digital PERSONAL WORKSTATION

NOTE: It is highly recommended that you make a hardcopy of the current BIOS settings prior to upgrading to a new version of the BIOS. Please refer to the RELNOTES.TXT file for additional information regarding this version of BIOS.

  1. make BIOS DOS bootable

    • Download the .EXE kit containing the "diskimage.exe", "DPWSnnnn.vvv" and "makeboot.bat" files and unpack.
    • Execute the "makeboot.bat" file from Windows 95/98 or Windows NT. You will be instructed to insert a floppy diskette into the floppy drive (Drive A). After doing so, DISKIMAGE.EXE will create a DOS bootable floppy disk.
    • Insert the floppy created in step 2 into the floppy drive of the system to be updated and turn on the power.
    • The system will prompt you to enter any key to continue with the BIOS upgrade or enter "Control C" to abort the BIOS installation. Upon flash completion the system will reboot. During this reboot the system may give you an error and tell you to run setup.

To clear this error, do the following:

  1. Depress F2 during POST to go into setup. See the procedure below.
  2. Load factory defaults by going to the EXIT main menu and selecting "Load Factory Defaults".
  3. Choose "Exit and Save Changes". The system will save the factory default settings and reboot. It should now reboot with no errors. However, in some cases it may be necessary to power cycle the unit. The system will save the factory default settings and reboot. It should now reboot with no errors.
  4. If the system requires modifications to the default BIOS they must be made manually after reboot

Entering BIOS

To enter BIOS, power on the system and wait for memory to complete self-test. You will note that some monitors will take a long time to start displaying the power-up messages, thus you will have to push the RESET button located next to the power switch to get back to the required display.

Once memory testing is complete, a display on the bottom of the screen will prompt the following:

Press [F2] to enter SETUP

Once memory testing is complete, a display on the bottom of the screen will prompt the following:

Press [F2] to enter SETUP

Only while this message is being displayed can you successfully enter SETUP by pressing [F2]. Hold [F2] down for several seconds to assure that the power-up code recognizes a key has been hit.
