Readme.txt file for ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 for DIGITAL PCs Copyright (c) Digital Equipment Corporation 1998 This README.TXT is intended for the ClientWORKS user. It provides additional information about ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1. SPECIAL FEATURES ---------------- 1) ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 supports DMI Version 2.0. 2) ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 supports integration with ServerWORKS Manager Version 4.0 and greater. OPERATING SYSTEMS SUPPORTED --------------------------- 1) ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 runs under Microsoft Windows NT Workstation Version 4, Microsoft Windows 95, and Microsoft Windows 98. 2) While using Windows 98, any ClientWORKS references to Windows 95 should be substituted with Windows 98. LANGUAGES SUPPORTED -------------------- 1) ClientWORKS 3.1.1 is available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese. INSTALLATION ------------ 1) If you installed the Module for DMI 2.0 previously available from the ClientWORKS web site, you must uninstall it before you install ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1. 2) For ClientWORKS to operate properly, it requires that all its components are installed from the same ClientWORKS version. For example, the ClientWORKS Version 3.X DMIExplorer will not work correctly with ClientWORKS Version 2.X SMART Monitor. You must install ClientWORKS Version 3.X SMART Monitor. 3) If you are upgrading to ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 systems on Windows 95/98, you should shutdown any open ClientWORKS applications from previous versions. You should be particularly careful to shutdown DMIInst.exe using the following procedure: From the Start menu a. Click Run. b. Type dmiinst stop. c. Click OK. If DMIInst is running during the installation, the procedure appears to hang when the initialization progress bar reaches 100%. 4) If you have Microsoft SNMP already installed and running on your system when you install ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1, the installation will ask if you want to stop this service before you install the ClientWORKS SNMP agents. You should answer Yes to shut down SNMP. You can restart the SNMP agent during the installation, or allow it to be restarted when you reboot the system. 5) To activate SNMP traps after you install ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 with SNMP: a) Reboot the system. b) Log in. c) Reboot the system again. 6) Do not use Add/Remove to deinstall previous versions of ClientWORKS before upgrading to ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1. The ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 installation will detect and remove all previous ClientWORKS modules. 7) If you are upgrading to ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 and you had previously specified user or system information using the Set ClientWORKS Information utility, you will need to re-enter that information. Refer to "Using ClientWORKS with DIGITAL PCs: A Guide for Network Administrators" for more information. The Set ClientWORKS Information utility is described in "Using ClientWORKS Tools." 8) Do not install ServerWORKS Manager agents if you intend to install ClientWORKS SNMP subagents. If ServerWORKS Manager agents are already installed, you should uninstall them before you install ClientWORKS SNMP subagents. Refer to the "DIGITAL ServerWORKS Manager Installation and User Guide" for information about uninstalling agents. COMPONENT: DMIExplorer ---------------------- 1) ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1 does not support editing DMI read-write attributes either locally or remotely. 2) Refresh is not supported at the row level. 3) In some instances icons may over-write one another. Click on the plus (+) symbol to refresh the screen properly. 4) For DMIExplorer to present consistent information under Windows 98, NetBEUI must be installed. 5) If you do not see the domain or system you want to query when running the remote DMIExplorer under Windows 98, at the command line prompt enter the following commands for the domain and system you are looking for respectively: DMIExplorer /root="\\Microsoft Network\\" DMIExplorer /root="\\Microsoft Network\\\\" 6) If you have installed ClientWORKS on a portable device, be aware that information about the battery may be represented in an unexpected manner. In the Portable Battery group information, when the value is "unknown" it is represented as 0 (zero). COMPONENT: SMART Monitor ----------------------- 1) For systems that do not contain any SMART hardware features (e.g. SMART hard drives, voltage and thermal probes, SecureBox sensor, SecureON counter, etc.) SMART Monitor will only display a dialog with the message "Unable to connect to SmartServer". 2) Under Windows NT, you may need to start SMARTServer manually when you reboot after installing ClientWORKS Version 3.1.1. From the Start menu a. Click Run. b. Type smartserver and click OK. COMPONENT: SNMP SUPPORT ----------------------- 1) On Windows NT systems, the SNMP service and the Digital DMI Instrumentation service must be able to interact with the desktop. To verify this setting, choose the Services applet in the Control Panel. Select the service, then click the Startup button. Make sure the options "Log On As: System Account" and "Allow Service to Interact with Desktop" are enabled. 2) On Windows 98 systems, due to added security introduced, you need to register the SNMP trap target system as the permitted manager on the local client system. The registry that you must set is My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet \Services\SNMP\Parameters\PermittedManagers For example, if the remote trap target system is Piglet3, with an IP address of 16.26.224.191, perform these steps: a) Go to that registry. b) Click New -> String Value on the right hand panel. c) If this is the first entry, then enter 1 as its name; 2 if the second one; 3 the third one, and so on. d) Enter the IP address as its content. If Policy Editor is installed on your system, you have the option of using it to make this change. To run Policy Editor: a) Click Start. b) Click Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Policy Editor. c) Click File -> Open Registry; d) Double click Local Computer -> Windows 98 System -> SNMP. e) Click Permitted managers. f) Click Show.. button; g) Add the IP address of an intended Permitted manager. h) Click OK. COMPONENT: SecureBOX ---------------------- 1) If the Reset request appears to be taking too long to complete, press Reset again. COMPONENT: The ClientWORKS Guide for Network Administrators ----------------------------------------------------------- 1) The ClientWORKS Guide for Network Administrators is shipped in .PDF format. This means that to read the manual, you must have Adobe Acrobat reader Version 2.1 or later installed on your system. (The Acrobat Reader can be obtained from the Adobe web site.) ClientWORKS SUPPORT WEB SITE ---------------------------- 1) The ClientWORKS web site is currently located at: http://www.pc.digital.com/products/software/clientworks.asp To access the web site, follow these steps: a. Go to the Digital web page at http://www.digital.com/. b. Click "Products". c. Under "Software" click "Systems, Storage and Network Management." d. Under "Systems, Storage and Network Management" click "ClientWORKS". e. The download section is at the end of the ClientWORKS page. Help Files ---------- 1) Help files in the V3.1.1 release of ClientWORKS are the V3.0 help files. This is intentional. ClientWORKS V3.1.1 provides localization in multiple languages. No other features were introduced. 2) When using the help files in languages other than English, be aware of these issues: * DMIExplorer is sometimes incorrectly shown as DMIexplorer and DMI Explorer. * MIF Maker is sometimes incorrectly shown as MIFMaker. * SMART is sometimes incorrectly shown as S.M.A.R.T. * Under the Drilling Down help topic, do not use the << and >> toolbar buttons. Use the Next> button under each example. * When using the Viewing the Attributes help Topic, you must select the Attribute whose properties you want to display with the properties icon. * In some cases, sample screens used to enhance help descriptions reflect an earlier version of ClientWORKS. In other cases, items on sample screens are not grayed out when they should have been. Related Hardware Notes ----------------------- 1) When a hardware shutdown due to excessive temperature is required, allow enough time for the system to cool off before re-booting. Refer to your hardware documentation, for recommended cooling intervals. This precaution prevents erroneous temperature thresholds from being displayed in the SMART Monitor utility.
