Overview

This document provides introductory information about the Online
Documentation Library (ODL) CD-ROM Collections: HP OpenVMS Alpha LP
(Layered Products), HP OpenVMS Alpha OS (Operating System products), and
HP OpenVMS VAX. It provides general and platform-specific installation
and user information for the ODL.

The OpenVMS Alpha and OpenVMS VAX ODL CD-ROM sets consist of:

* ISO 9660 Level 2 (ODL-ISO) compliant CD-ROMs that can be run from
Microsoft Windows and HP OpenVMS platforms.

These discs contain documentation in HTML and PDF format, and use
HTML pages as the navigation mechanism to browse to and display
documents. A search engine is also included for full text searching
  (Windows platforms only).

* A Bookreader CD-ROM set (ODL-BKB), which is an archive set containing
documentation in Bookreader format only. This set includes a disc for
use on native platforms (ODL-BKB-AXP or ODL-BKB-VAX), and a disc for
  Windows platforms (ODL-BKB-PC).

These discs contain static documentation, and will not be updated. As
a result, documentation may not be the current revision. Setup and
user information for the ODL-BKB is included later in this document and
in user documentation residing on each ODL-BKB CD-ROM.

Please note: Beginning with the first calendar quarter in 2007, the
Bookreader/Archived CD-ROMs will no longer be included in
the quarterly distribution of the ODL consolidations.

Mounting the ODL-ISO CD-ROM

Windows Platforms:

* Insert the ODL-ISO disc into your CD-ROM drive.

OpenVMS Alpha/VAX Platforms:

* $ MOUNT/OVER=ID/MEDIA_FORMAT=CDROM/UNDEFINED_FAT=(STREAM:2048) device:

Browsing the ODL-ISO

To begin browsing the ODL-ISO CD-ROM, open index.htm from the root of the
CD-ROM in your web browser.

For a listing of products available on this CD-ROM, open prodlist.htm from
the /ODLDOC folder on the CD-ROM or click on the link from contents.htm.
This page also includes a listing of static documentation available on the
OpenVMS Alpha or OpenVMS VAX Bookreader CD-ROM for reference.

Searching ODL-ISO (Windows platforms only)

The main ODL page should display and the ASTAware SearchDisc search engine
should launch when the disc is inserted. If it does not, run the
SDWinjava.bat file from the root of the CD-ROM. The SearchDisc icon should
appear in your taskbar when the search engine is running.

You can enter a search query in the search box from any ODL navigation page
on the CD-ROM.

**IMPORTANT** You must shut down the search engine by clicking the
SearchDisc icon in your taskbar, before you eject the CD-ROM from your
drive. This should also be done before putting in another CD-ROM to search.

Configuring ODL-ISO Search for a Hard Drive (Windows Platforms Only)

Note: See known issue below if your language settings are not set to
       US English.

If you choose to copy the ODL-ISO CD-ROM content to a hard drive, you will
need to reconfigure the search engine to retrieve search results from the
new location.

* Copy the entire CD-ROM to an area on a hard drive. For example, C:\ODL

* Be sure that the search engine is shut down before proceeding. To shut
the search engine down, click on the SearchDisc icon in your taskbar, and
click yes when asked if you would like to shut down the search engine.

* Run MediaSwitcher.exe from the area you copied the CD-ROM to. This
will reconfigure the search engine to search and retrieve search results
from the new ODL-ISO location. This executable is located at the root
  of the CD-ROM.

* Enter the path where you copied your ODL CD-ROM to in the "Select the
SearchDisc Installation Folder" box. For example, if you copied the CD-
ROM to your C: drive in a folder named ODL, enter C:\ODL here. Click
  Next.

* Enter the path again where you copied your ODL CD-ROM to in the
"Select the Search Documents Folder" box. Click Install.

* Restart the search engine by starting autolaunch.exe from the new
  location.

Known Issue: The installer used for the Media Switch Utility, described
above, is not currently supported for all language settings.
If your language is not supported, you will receive an error
stating, "Installer User Interface Mode Not Supported," when
attempting to run MediaSwitcher.exe from the root of the ODL
	      collection on your hard drive.

You can use either of the following workarounds to address this:

Create a network drive of the directory where the ODL CD-ROM was copied to,
making it appear as a virtual drive. From there, open autolaunch.exe.

Temporarily change your regional settings on your computer to US English,
run the MediaSwitcher.exe, then change the settings back to your original
settings.

Getting Started with the Bookreader ODL (ODL-BKB)

The ODL-BKB set consists of a single CD-ROM disc that runs on OpenVMS Alpha
or OpenVMS VAX platforms (ODL-BKB-AXP, ODL-BKB-VAX), and a single CD-ROM
disc that runs on Microsoft Windows platforms (ODL-BKB-PC).

These ODL discs use the Bookshelf Navigation Utility (BNU) as the primary
interface to online bookshelves. Bookshelves contain links to documentation
in Bookreader format. The BNU invokes the Bookreader viewer to display ODL
documentation.

Installation instructions for both platforms of the ODL-BKB follow. For BNU
system requirements and more detailed installation instructions, refer to
the Online Documentation Library CD-ROM User's Guide, which is available
online in the Getting Started bookshelf, and is available in PostScript and
text formats in the [readme] directory on each ODL-BKB disc.

Note: Previous releases of ODL on native platforms required and/or provided
other viewers (Netscape, Hyperhelp) for other file types. These are
not required for the ODL-BKB discs. References made to these viewers
in the Online Documentation Library CD-ROM Users Guide do not apply
to the ODL-BKB CD-ROM. Documentation is in Bookreader format only.

Installing and Using the ODL-BKB-AXP or ODL-BKB-VAX (OpenVMS Platforms)

Procedures for installing and using the ODL-BKB-VMS, including example
commands, are summarized below. The examples assume that the installation

Installing and Using the ODL-BKB-PC (Windows Platforms)

The procedures for installing and using the ODL-BKB-PC are as follows:

* Insert the ODL-BKB-PC CD-ROM for MS-Windows Platforms into the CD-ROM
  reader.

* View the "Readme.txt" file in the top level directory for important
information before proceeding with the installation.

* From the "Start" menu, select "Run...", and enter E:\Setup.exe, where E
is the drive letter assigned to the ODL-BKB-PC CD-ROM.

* Respond to the setup program dialogs as desired and/or take the default
  responses by pressing <enter>.

* After completion of the setup program, invoke the BNU from
  "Start/Programs/Compaq ODL/BNU".

* If you wish to copy the contents of the ODL-BKB-PC CD-ROM to a hard
disk and have sufficient available space, invoke the Copy ODL program
  from "Start/Programs/Compaq ODL/Copy ODL".
