USIMINAS and HP celebrate product quality, ongoing partnership

USIMINAS, a leading Brazilian steel company, recognized for world-class performance indexes and practices, invited HP to a special ceremony on May 4, 2004, to celebrate product quality and the ongoing partnership of the two companies. As a centerpiece to this ceremony, a PDP11/40 system was deactivated. The PDP system was first installed at USIMINAS's Main Substation in 1975—the first PDP system installed in Brazil—and had been running nonstop for almost 30 years. This system originally controlled the electrical energy demand to stay within an agreed range, allowing USIMINAS to pay a reduced energy consumption fare.

Over time, the PDP system received hardware and software upgrades and was moved to a new site, the Energy Center, but always fulfilled the job requirements. The PDP initially had 32K (core) memory and two RK05īs running RSX11D. It ended up with 128K of memory and two RL02īs running RSX11M. USIMINAS uses HP OpenVMS-based AlphaServer systems running BASEstar to do some process control and HP ProLiant systems running SAP/R3 applications.
