OpenVMS operating system, version 7.2-1

Compaq is pleased to introduce the OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1 operating system. OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1 is a follow-on release to OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2 and replaces the OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2 release.

OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1 includes all the capabilities of OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2, plus provides the following new support:

  • COM (Component Object Model) Version 1.1 for OpenVMS (with NT authentication)
  • Compaq AlphaServers GS140, GS60, GS60E, ES40, DS20, and DS10
  • Compaq Galaxy Software Architecture on OpenVMS AlphaServers GS140 and GS60/GS60E
  • Compaq AlphaStation XP900 workstation
  • New Fibre Channel storage interconnect support on AlphaServer 800, 1000A, 1200, 4000, 4100, 8200, 8400, GS60, GS60E and GS140 systems
  • Gigabit Ethernet, a new high bandwidth standard in Ethernet technology.
  • Memory Channel Version 2.0.
  • Multipath failover with shadowing support for parallel SCSI and Fibre Channel configurations
  • Intel Fast Ethernet (10/100)
  • Multiple tape density fixes
  • Remedial kit fixes from December 1998 to May 1999
The following layered products have been updated and are included in the OpenVMS Version 7.2-1 kit:
  • Advanced Server Version 7.2A for OpenVMS Alpha
  • DIGITAL TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Version 5.0A
  • Availability Manager Version 1.2
  • DECnet-Plus Version 7.2-1
  • Netscape FastTrack Server Version 3.01A
OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1 is the newest release of OpenVMS, which provides the highest level of interoperability between OpenVMS and Windows NT. It also offers a new computing environment which was introduced with OpenVMS Version 7.2, Galaxy Software Architecture on OpenVMS Alpha, that delivers even greater levels of performance, scalability, availability and extremely flexible operational capabilities.

With these latest additions, you can gain increased performance by running OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1 on the newest Alpha systems. Plus, OpenVMS Cluster customers have even more options now with the addition of Fibre Channel as a new ANSI standard shared storage interconnect, with Gigabit Ethernet as a cluster interconnect, and with support for faster Memory Channel Version 2.0 hardware.

Fibre Channel

Fibre Channel as an OpenVMS Cluster shared storage interconnect offers many advantages over other interconnects, including:
  • High-speed transmission -- 100 megabytes per second
  • Long distance -- up to 500 meters per link
  • High availability with multipath failover between storage devices
  • Industry standard
For the latest information on the systems supported with Fibre Channel, see the following web site:

Gigabit ethernet

Gigabit Ethernet utilizes a new technology that transfers data at a rate of one gigabit per second, which is ten times the rate of a Fast Ethernet adapter. Gigabit Ethernet addresses congestion experienced at the backbone and server levels of today’s networks and will greatly enhance the performance of network applications.

Memory channel version 2.0

Memory Channel Version 2.0 provides further enhancements to this existing OpenVMS cluster interconnect. With Version 2.0, support is added for simultaneous communications between four sender-receiver pairs and greater distances between systems.

For the latest information on the Memory Channel, see the following web site:

COM version 1.1 for OpenVMS

COM (Component Object Model) is a technology that allows developers to create distributed network objects. COM for OpenVMS is an implementation of the Microsoft code that supports the COM draft standards. For OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.2-1, Compaq has added the following functionality to COM for OpenVMS Version 1.1:
  • Extended OpenVMS security to enable secure connections between Windows NT and OpenVMS
  • New IMPORT and EXPORT commands added to the OpenVMS registry
  • Windows NT style event logging to COM for OpenVMS

Advanced server version 7.2A for OpenVMS

Advanced Server Version 7.2A for OpenVMS Alpha provides networking functionally equivalent to that of the Windows NT Server - with additional features to support new features in OpenVMS V7.2. This software runs only on OpenVMS V7.2 and OpenVMS V7.2-1 Alpha systems. You can upgrade from Advanced Server V7.2 to Advanced Server V7.2A before you upgrade your Operating System to OpenVMS V7.2-1. Or, you can stay on OpenVMS V7.2. Upgrading to Advanced Server V7.2A will give you the most recent maintenance updates. Note: This product is only available on Alpha systems, so if you are a VAX system user, you must use PATHWORKS V6.0B for OpenVMS. If you are using COM V1.1, you must run Advanced Server V7.2A on OpenVMS V7.2-1 Alpha systems.

Galaxy software architecture

You can configure AlphaServer GS140, GS60, and GS60E systems as OpenVMS Galaxy systems to run three instances of OpenVMS on AlphaServer GS140 systems or two instances on AlphaServer GS60 and GS60E systems. To create an OpenVMS Galaxy environment on AlphaServer GS140, GS60 and GS60E systems, you will need the latest version of the V5.4-xx console firmware which can be obtained form the following location:

Multipath failover

Multipath failover support is for failover between multiple paths that might exist between an OpenVMS system and certain types of disk devices. Multipath failover increases availability. If the current path to a mounted disk fails, the system automatically fails over to the alternate path.

Intel fast ethernet (10/100)

Support for Compaq's Fast Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs) based on Intel's i8255x Ethernet controllers has been added to the OpenVMS Version 7.2-1 release. These NICs replace the end-of-life DE500 family of adapters.

Compaq Availability Manager v1.2

Compaq Availability Manager V1.2 now uses a Java® graphical user interface (GUI) to display information about OpenVMS nodes on a Windows NT system. Because the new GUI is Java based, Availability Manager V1.2 can be run on OpenVMS or Windows NT. Compaq Availability Manager is a system management tool integrated with OpenVMS and used to improve OpenVMS system and OpenVMS Cluster availability. It enables monitoring of one or more OpenVMS nodes on an extended local area network (LAN) from a Windows NT node. While the software collects system and process data from multiple OpenVMS nodes, it analyzes the data and displays the output via a graphical user interface.

Availability

Compaq OpenVMS Version 7.2-1 is now available and is being delivered to all appropriate Service update customers.
