HP OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3-2 now shipping

HP is pleased to announce that OpenVMS Version 7.3-2 is now shipping to service customers. This version of OpenVMS is supported on all AlphaServer DS, ES, and GS series systems and Alpha based workstations, and it will begin shipping on the AlphaServer ES47, ES80, and GS1280 by February. There are many enhancements to this version of the operating system; these enhancements are listed in the Features and enhancements section of this page.

OpenVMS continues to focus on making changes that improve system, SMP, and I/O performance, with the ultimate goal of improving application performance. This release also includes enhancements that simplify porting of UNIX® applications to OpenVMS, and it consolidates OpenVMS hardware update kits for EV7 platforms support and features.

Features and enhancements

New features and enhancements to the operating system include the following:

StorageWorks Modular SAN array 1000 Support (MSA 1000) - A new high-performance storage array that enables a two-node cluster with its embedded 3-port Fibre Channel arbitrated loop hub.

Fastpath for LAN - Improves LAN performance and scalability on multiple CPU AlphaServer systems. It also allows individual LAN adapters to have a preferred CPU to process I/O.

Error log viewer - Allows developers, testers, and system managers to quickly examine an error log from the command line.

Analyzer tool for EV7 - Makes it easier to identify both hardware and software errors, such as crashes, because each CPU can record the last instructions executed prior to a crash.

System performance enhancements - Allows systems to run efficiently with large working sets and large numbers of processes, and improves OpenVMS scalability.

XFC performance enhancements - Improves performance, allows more efficient use of memory, and enables useful, readable displays.

LAN failover - Automatically determines which network adapters are functioning and transparently selects one of the adapters to maintain the LAN traffic, allowing for seamless failover to similar LAN devices. For example, if there are two fast Ethernet connections between two machines and one connection goes bad, the system automatically detects the fault and redirects to the other link transparently.

Component indictment CPU - Provides higher overall system availability by taking a failing CPU offline (in a multiprocessor system) before it can cause an overall system halt.

Multipath support for third-party applications - Allows third-party SCSI disk-caching or disk-shadowing applications to run in a SCSI or Fibre Channel multipath configuration.

Dynamic Volume Expansion - Allows a disk of any size to be initialized to a larger size enabling it to logically be expanded beyond the initial disk size over time. It also allows a disk to be replaced with a larger one or to be expanded into a virtual device that has a size greater than the size of a single physical disk.

Performance API (GETRMI) - A system service that allows users to have real-time access to performance data. This service provides more robust performance metrics in the areas of overall CPU, memory, MSCP, and distributed lock management.

This is only a partial list. For a complete list of features, see the HP OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3-2 features and benefits chart.
