VWS?

» close window

The Question is:

I am working on Y2K on many VAXstations (3100 and 4000) and am currently at
the inventory stage. I must identify all software and versions.

Most of these systems have a VWS license.

Stupid question of the day: what is VWS.

How do I tell what version of VWS is installed?

Do I need VWS if all systems have NAS 250?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

The Answer is :

VWS is the VMS Workstation Software. It is the windowing system
  that predates DECwindows.

OpenVMS systems running V5.1-3 and later generally run DECwindows,
not VWS -- systems with VWS-based software are limited to older
systems and to older graphics controllers.

The easiest way to tell what windowing system you are running -- if
you don't recognize the differences in the look and feel -- is likely
via the setting of the WINDOW_SYSTEM parameter in SYSGEN.

    WINDOW_SYSTEM
     0: none
     1: VWS
     2: DECwindows

The VWS version is available in the "Getting Started" window that
is displayed before login. Before you touch the mouse, type any
key -- the corner of the "Getting Started" window will display the
VWS version. If you are logged in, use the ANALYZE/IMAGE command
on the SYS$SYSTEM:UISBG.EXE, looking for the "Image Identification
Information" section. (There are other approaches...)

The Wizard does not believe that VWS is covered under any of the
NAS licensing packages -- DECwindows is covered.
