ODS2 disks on other systems?

» close window

The Question is:

Is there any way of reading OpenVMS CD-ROMS (such as online documentation
disks) on anything other than an OpenVMS host. For example I have tried NFS
exporting the CD-ROM drive on my desktop PC but the NFS Server software
refuses to acknowledge the Disk..

Any Ideas???

Cheers

The Answer is :

TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS (UCX) NFS does not currently support access
to ISO9660 format volumes. Further, where you even able to mount the
volumes, you would not likely be able to read and process the contents
  of the bookreader-format documentaiton files.

Alternatives include acquiring the documentation for the OpenVMS V7.2
release (currently in field test). The V7.2 documentation is on a volume
that is readable on various systems, and the documentation files are
in HTML format. Existing documentation already in HTML format can be
served via one of the various OpenVMS webservers -- commercial and
freeware webservers are available. Other alternatives include using
the information in the OpenVMS FAQ sections entitled "DOC1. Where can
I find online copies of OpenVMS manuals?", and "DOC2. What online
  information is available?".

A portable version of an ODS2 volume structure utility will likely
appear on an upcoming freeware distribution (likely included with the
OpenVMS V7.2 release), as well -- this utility allows applications to
  read ODS2 volumes.
