SMP upgrade for AlphaServer 2000?

» close window

The Question is:

We have two AlphaServer 2000 running Digital unix and vms v5.5.2 ,and now
want to add second cpu boardon it . I don't know if I should reconfigure the
kernaland reconfigure.Or just plug the board in the slot.

The Answer is :

OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 does not operate on an AlphaServer 2000. Only
OpenVMS Alpha V6.1 or later will operate on the AlphaServer 2000 series
system, with the specific minumum version depending on the specific CPU.
  21164A (EV56) processors will require a minimum of V6.2-1H3, and the 5/375
series processor module is not supported by any version of OpenVMS.

UNIX questions are better asked of a UNIX Wizard, not an OpenVMS Wizard.

AUTOGEN will suffice for the necessary steps for OpenVMS to recognize
and operate with the new processor. (OpenVMS itself will automatically
recognize the new processor, the AUTOGEN will reallocate resources as
necessary based on recent system usage and based on the current system
hardware configuration.) Make sure you clean out the cruft present in
MODPARAMS.DAT before you run AUTOGEN -- avoid the inclusion of absolute
settings for variable parameters. Use the ADD, MIN or MAX parameter
syntax whenever appropriate, and remove any unsubstantiated or arcane
system tuning tweaks left over from antiquity.

You will need to register any necessary license upgrades, obviously.
