The Question is: I have an older VAX 4000/100 running VMS 5.5-2 and need to replace several of the existing RZ24 drives in the BA350 with larger RZ29 narrow SCSI drives. RZ29's weren't available at the time the 4000/100 was qualified, but I believe that it should work because the drive size is well below the 8GB limit for VMS 5.5-2. The drives that the RZ29's are replacing are not system disks, but old DEC DBMS area, snapshot, and after image files. My questions are, 1. are there any ECO's for this old of a VAX, which is not under maintenance, or revision levels for the RZ29's that I should be concerned of since the 29's had numerous revisions? 2. Are there any heat problems with the 29's in the BA350? 3. Does DEC have a larger drive solution that would leap-frog the 4.3GB drive? and I do understand that solutions to my are probably not DEC supported because they've never been qualified for this system, but a confidient 'should-work' would be appreciated. Best regards, Barry Treahy The Answer is : Please contact your local hardware support organization for assistance, the level of detail required here is well beyond what can be reasonably collected or provided via Ask The Wizard. There is a dual-speed fan ECO kit -- fans, air baffles, and other parts necessary to keep the disks from overheating and failing -- available for specific older BA350 enclosures, and dual-speed fans are required for RZ29 and similar disks. Certain BA350 enclosures may not (do not) have backplane support for the necessary dual-speed fans. Again, please contact your local hardware support organization for assistance. 6 or fewer RZ29 disks will operate with the BA35X-HA power supply on the BA350 series, but 7 drives will require the BA35X-HF supply. You will want to be running the required firmware version for the RZ29.
