Configuring SCSI TLZ10 on VAXstation 4000?

» close window

The Question is:

Hello,

We are trying to add a tlz10 (dds-3) tapedrive
to a VAXstation 4000/90. Once we boot the
"show dev" reveals:

KHARMA$RMT0: Offline

A full listing (show dev/full) reveals:

Magtape KHARMA$RMT0:, device type (type not yet identified),..., device is a
template only.

We've tried several autofigure, sysgen and
sysman options. The main problem is that I'm
from a Unix environment and do not know much
about creating new VMS devices.

Can you help?
thanks for any help,

The Answer is :

RMT devices are typically UNIX tape devices, the Wizard would expect
a typical direct-connected TLZ10 device would appear with a name such
as MKA0: -- some form of non-standard additional software would likely
be involved with the existance of an RMT device.

Unlike various other operating system platforms, OpenVMS will
autoconfigures devices -- once the hardware is correctly configured
and attached to the platform, the OpenVMS software will automatically
configure the necessary device drivers and make the necessary device
  names visible.

First, power-cycle the system, bringing power up on the system box
after powering up any external SCSI enclosures present. Then make
sure the TLZ10 device is visible at the console prompt. Make sure
the SCSI unit number is unique (across the host SCSI controller ID
and all SCSI devices present), and also make sure that the console
correctly identifies the SCSI device as a TLZ10 tape.

Please contact the customer support center. (The Wizard does not
have access to any immediate indication that the TLZ10 device is
or is not supported on the VAXstation 4000 model 90 series, as well.)
