MOUNT and Larger (64KB+) Magtape Block Sizes?

» close window

The Question is:

I have an 8mm tape written with 65536 byte blocks. The open vms mount
command limits block size to 65534 blocks. Is there a way to read this
tape?

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS V7.2 magnetic tape driver (MKDRIVER) does not support block
sizes of 65536 bytes (64KB) and larger -- adding this support to the
device driver would require source code changes.

OpenVMS Engineering will consider enhancing the device driver to support
low-level access via sys$qio calls, for situations such as this particular
  one.

In addition to limits established by MKDRIVER, any RMS-based access to
the tape data will have maximum block size restrictions of RMS, as well.
