Printing problems with DCPS V1.3?

» close window

The Question is:

I have a Alpha Workstation 255 running
open vms 7.0. I also have a Dec
Postscript Printer Laser Plus
2300 (I think). It is hooked up via
a serial cable to opa1: using real
Dec cables.

DCPS will not print postscript
files of more than 6 pages. BUT,
I can copy a postscript file of any
length to the opa1: port, and it
works.

I have slowed the speed down to
4800 baud at the printer, and spent
endless hours fussing around to no
avail.

I might also note that I got a modem
to work with opa0: after 1.5 years
of fussing around. The manual is
plainly incorrect about opa1: being
modem capable. But that's not at
issue.

Just getting the printer working is.
I would like to be able to write
latex postscript files with imbedded
graphs etc., but need DCPS to work.

I think I have version 1.3 up. The
documentation inside the DCL is
awful, and systems managers at the
University of Pittsburgh say DCPS
parameters are too poorly documented.

So, any ideas? (Other than paying
$250/hour to some folks in Colorado.

Thanks.

The Answer is :

The Wizard would move to DCPS V1.5 and to OpenVMS V7.1, or later.

Please contact the Compaq customer support center directly. You will
need to identify the actual version of DCPS, the specific printer, the
printer configuration, the specific cabling in use, and various other
attributes. You will need to indicate what happens when more than six
pages are printed -- is this a serial line flow-control problem (often
garbage or dropped characters ensue, etc), or are there error message(s),
or does the printing merely stop? You will also want to indicate if large
text files copied directly to the printer -- without spooling, queues, or
DCPS involved -- operate as expected.

"Inside the DCL"? As in "online help"? If so, please acquire access
to the product documentation -- the HELP text is certainly not intended
as a replacement for access to the necessary product documentation.

Console ports may or may not have modem control. This does not mean
that the modems cannot be made to work, merely that certain capabilities
of "normal" modem behaviour may be unavailable. Please see the many
other discussions of modems here in Ask The Wizard.
