disk fatal drive and file structure allocation err

» close window

The Question is:

Dear Wizard,

I was busy with a stand-alone backup to one of my disks when the power
failed.

I have a VAX 4000/96 and the disk giving the problem is a Seagate ST32171N
(RZ28L-A)

I tried the backup after the power failure again and the following message
appear:- "FILE STRUCTURE ALLOCATION FAILURE". The backup command used =
backup/verify/image/rewind mka500: dka300:

I can boot using the other disk, but get the following error when trying to
mount the problem disk:- "FATAL DRIVE ERROR"

What is the problem with the disk? Will it be possible to fix the problem?

Many Thanks

Edwin

The Answer is :

Bootstrap OpenVMS off a recent distribution CD-ROM (root SYS1 on OpenVMS
VAX V7.2) or off an alternate OpenVMS root, and try to INITIALIZE this
disk, or use the BACKUP/INITIALIZE qualifer. (Depending on exactly what
happened to the disk, you may end up needing to reformat or replace the
disk -- the incidence of hardware failures resulting from power failures
  is not unknown.)
