Seeking information on availability of fix? (MAIL)

» close window

The Question is:

The VMS callable mail facility does not release virtual memory when a call
is made to mail$send_add_address. This problem is known, and documented in
the AES database under title "Callable MAIL Leaks Memory With
LIB$GET_VM/LIB$FREE_VM".

This does not occur on a VAX.

I am responsible for an application which routes thousands of emails a day,
and which uses callable mail to send and receive these messages. (This is
not spammer)

Please indicate when this problem will be fixed, it is causing a major
problem.

Thank you
 John Devany

The Answer is :

"Please do not ask [the OpenVMS Wizard] questions that ... are time-critical
or business-critical -- please contact the Compaq Customer Support Center
  directly with these questions."

The OpenVMS Wizard does not establish nor order priorities for working on
fixes, nor is the OpenVMS Wizard in a position to track the timely
resolution of problems -- this is the job of the Compaq Customer Support
Centers. Further, the Compaq Customer Support Center can potentially
make an early fix available to you.

Pending availability of the fix, the only available solutions include
a periodic image rundown and restart, and quotas sufficiently large to
handle the interval between the restarts.

The OpenVMS Wizard has checked with the OpenVMS Engineer that is
maintaining the MAIL utility, and the engineer indicates that this is
the first report of any memory leak problems with MAIL in V7.2. There
were problems on an earlier OpenVMS release, and these were addressed.
(In other words, please contact the Compaq Customer Support Center,
and expect to be asked for details including information leading to
  the creation of a reproducer.)
