The Question is: What are the pros and cons of using TELNET or LAT for connections into OpenVMS from LAT terminal servers or OpenVMS hosts? The Answer is :
Each protocol has some features that the other lacks and each has
strengths and weaknesses, but both are largely interchangeable for
many applications.
LAT is optimized for efficient operations on a local area network (LAN).
It is not a routed protocol, though it can be bridged to remote LAN
segments when necessary. LAT has superior tracking of the origination
of the connection and has better support for "reverse" operations used
for printing and such.
Telnet is based on IP, and is a routed protocol. Telnet is more useful
than LAT for remote access in distributed (routed) networks. Telnet is
also available on a larger number of platforms than is LAT.
LAT, Telnet, DECnet CTERM, and other protocols can and do coexist on the
same LAN segment, and in parallel on the same OpenVMS host.
