Problems with disk volume labels and MOUNT?

» close window

The Question is:

We have an alpha 4100. A RZ1CB (local) had to be replaced.

We dismounted the drive and installed a spare. Initially we we labeled the
drive KPERRY.

In short, once we reloaded the drive with our data, we renamed the label to
the original one and dismounted it.

When we tried to remount the drive with the original label it would not work
until we rebooted the machine.

Can you tell me why?

Thank you,

The Answer is :

Without specific details around the "would not work" -- error messages,
commands used, storage configuration, etc -- it is difficult to say with
  any certainty exactly what happened.

OpenVMS uses the volume label to track the specific disk device, and will
strive to prevent two disks of the same olume label from being mounted
  shareable at the same time.
