Formatting a SCSI Disk?

» close window

The Question is:

How do I perform a low level SCSI format on a Vaxstation 4000 Model 90
computer?

The Answer is :

OpenVMS generally does not require low-level SCSI formats, the DCL
INITIALIZE command is normally sufficient for a disk device.

On most VAX systems, the disk formatter is a separate diagnostic,
and this is used only by the factory, device OEM, or reseller, and
again only when it appears the disk is going bad -- and that latter
usage is usually futile on modern disks. (OpenVMS handles the loss
of random blocks. Once a disk format operation is being considered,
the disk is usually nearing complete failure.)

If this involves a third-party disk drive, please see the existing
discussions around the necessary integration and testing work that
  this process involves.
