OpenVMS on Personal Workstation -a series?

» close window

The Question is:

I am Trying to install VMS 7.1 on an Alpha PW 433a (upgrading the HW from an
alphastation 250). This was previously an NT machine and currently has a
corrupt install of NT on it.

I have booted to the SRC console and inserted the VMS 7.1 binaries CD and
typed the following command

boot -flags 0.0 dqa0 (where dqa0 is the name of the cd rom)

The disk is recognised as a bootable disk but part way through the
installation I get the following message...

%SYSBOOT-E-LDFAIL, Failed to load execlet, status = 001380AC

halted cpu 0

halt code = 5
HALT instruction executed
PC = 193c4
...

The current PAL code on the machine is VMS PALcode V1.18, OSF PALcode
V1.21-13

I am new to the VMS OS and haven't done an installation like this before,
where am I going wrong? (file system I assume is ntfs but can't confirm).

We are a current CSA Subscriber and I have the Sept. 99 SDK. But I can't
boot to any of the CD's included with the SDK, only our binaries cd.

Help Me Please,

Thanks,

The Answer is :

OpenVMS is not supported on the Personal Workstation "-a" series.

The PWS-a series was intended for and is supported only with Microsoft
Windows NT, while the PWS-au series systems are generally supported with
OpenVMS, Tru64 UNIX, and Windows NT.

The first release of OpenVMS Alpha that has support for the Personal
Workstation "-au" series is V7.1-1H1 or V7.1-1H2 (depending on the
configuration), and OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 or later is recommended.

An upgrade package from the PWS-a to PWS-au is/was offered.
