DE500-BA NIC auto-negotiation?

» close window

The Question is:

Dear Mr. Wizard:

I just added a second NIC, a DE500-BA to our Alpha 2000. It started okay, it
pick-up WE1 as the second device, the first NIC was WE0. The problem with
this new DE500 was it cannot establish a link to the existing 10 mb network.
But when I tried to hook it
up to another hub with 10/100 auto detect ports, on another network, it
will establish a link at 100 mb.
How can I make it estabblish a link with our existng 10 mb? Did I miss
something in the configuration? Is'nt the DE500 has 10/100 auto detect
capability?
Thank for your help.

The Answer is :

The DE500-BA typically requires the use of V7.1-1H1 (with the ECO
kits ALPLAN01_H1071 and ALPBASE01_071 potentially required), or later
OpenVMS Alpha release. Not V7.1. The OpenVMS Wizard would recommend
V7.1-2 or later over the use of V7.1-1H1 and V7.1-1H2.

Older Alpha firmware may require an upgrade in order to correctly
identify the DE500-BA device. Ensure your PALcode is current.

Information on the DE500-BA console variables are included below.
Manual settings are also available, and can provide specific control
in cases of errant settings. The use of manual settings that match
the network hub can (and do) provide specific "negotiation" control.

The following EWx0_MODE mode settings are available in the console:

    environment variable meaning
    -------------------------- --------------------------------
    Twisted-Pair 10 Mbit/sec, nofull_duplex
    Full Duplex, Twisted-Pair 10 Mbit/sec, full_duplex
    AUI 10 Mbit/sec, nofull_duplex
    BNC 10 Mbit/sec, nofull_duplex
    Fast 100 Mbit/sec, nofull_duplex
    FastFD (Full Duplex) 100 Mbit/sec, full_duplex
Auto-Negotiate Negotiated with the remote device

Based on your use of "WE0" and "WE1" device names and your use of
OpenVMS V7.1 (or later), the OpenVMS Wizard would also recommend an
upgrade to (at least) TCP/IP Services V5.0A.
