TZ87 DLT reading TZ89-written tape media?

» close window

The Question is:

I need to backup about 20 GB of data from an Alpha server that has a TZ89 tape
drive. The tape will be downloaded on an Alpha server that has a TZ87 tape
drive. Will there be any compatibility issues if there is no compaction used?

The Answer is :

You wish to know if tapes written on the TZ89 DLT drive can be
exchanged with the TZ87 DLT drive -- irrespective of the operating
system or utility chosen. While the TZ89 drive can read the
TZ87-written DLT III media, the TZ87 drive cannot read the
higher-density DLT IV media normally used by the TZ89. If,
however, the TZ89 DLT drive is loaded with and uses DLT III media,
the drive will create tapes that are readable by the TZ87 DLT drive.
