Meaning of Machine Check messages?

The Question is:

 
Hello Wizard,
 
I have a VAX 3100-90 that gives me a "(SCB + 054) Soft Error" and an
 "Unexpected exception - (SCB + 004) Machine Check" message each time I boot up
 the machine. It always halts at the >>> prompt. If I type "B" for boot, the
 machine will give me a bootstra
p failure. If I type in the word "continue" the machine will load the software
 and the system will boot.
 
Also, if I show error at the >>> prompt, I get the following message:

17741 0011 0000004D 00010000 80030000
 
I would greatly appreciate any info you can give me.

  Please contact your hardware support organization for assistance,
