The new mail count is incorrect?

» close window

The Question is:

SUBJECT: Mail Utility - Showing false new message count

PROBLEM: I'm experiencing a nuisance problem with the MAIL utility. We have
two OVMS V7.1 Alpha systems which are using a shared directory for a mail file
which is used by 1 user account (though multiple people are using the same
 account).

Our A system shows a correct new message count of No new messages while our B
system shows a false new message count of 150 new message. The mail file
MAIL.MAI has no new messages within it.

Both systems send status notes to the mail account when certain batch jobs are
 completed.

The A system has been used more often in reading and deleteing the mail
 messages of both systems.

I've investigated the available documentation but have not been able to find a
solution which eliminates the false indication.

REQUEST: I'd like a solution for clearing this false indication of 150 new
 messages from the B system.

THANX. SJHE

The Answer is :

The procedure to reset the new mail count is covered in the OpenVMS
documentation and in the OpenVMS FAQ.

The OpenVMS Wizard would encourage you to ensure that the files of the
OpenVMS security database (RIGHTSLIST, SYSUAF, etc) and other common
files (VMSMAIL_PROFILE.DATA, etc) are appropriately shared by all of
the members of the OpenVMS Cluster. (If this system configuration is
an OpenVMS Cluster, it would appear that the cluster configuration is
  incorrect.)

A list of the files that should be shared across all members of an
OpenVMS Cluster is included in the OpenVMS V7.2 and later versions of
  the file SYLOGICALS.TEMPLATE.
