DECnet-Plus and multiple NICs?

» close window

The Question is:

I have an Alpha 2100A cluster (3 nodes) running DECnet/OSI 6.3 ECO 10.
One node has two NIC. I installed an extra NIC, but when I brought the system
up it could only talk to other hosts on the LAN that were also running
DECnet/OSI. I could not set host to systems running Phase IV DECnet. Also, I
could not set host from a pha
se IV system to the system on which I had just added the NIC.

I removed the card & this returned the system to normal.

Tks, Charles.

The Answer is :

This would appear to be a configuration problem, but details of the
configuration and the DECnet node addressing, as well as details of
the local routing/bridging/switching network, as well as details of
the adjacencies and errors, will all be of interest.

DECnet Phase IV assumes one connection (station) per network segment,
and multiple controllers are permitted only when there is no connection
between the network segments, or when a DECnet router exists between
  the network segments.

Multiple controllers also typically assume the use of host-based routing.
DECnet Phase IV end-nodes can use only one circuit, while DECnet-Plus can
use multiple circuits. Packet route-through -- or having multiple active
circuits on a DECnet Phase IV host -- require routing.
