Disk volume INITIALIZE trade-offs?

» close window

The Question is:

Is there a formula for determining the
recommended max. directory block size, on an
OpenVMS system?

Versus disk size, cluster size, SCSI type, etc.

The Answer is :

The INITIALIZE default values are often good, though application-specific
storage requirements -- particularly the numbers of files expected on the
target disk volume -- will obviously need to be considered.

The documentation for the INITIALIZE command discusses the trade-offs.

OpenVMS V7.2 and later allow you to configure smaller disk volume cluster
factors than are permissible on earlier OpenVMS releases. This feature
can be particularly useful with larger disks and large numbers of files,
though it will be of less interest with fewer and larger files. Again,
recognize the trade-off depends on the application-specific requirements.
