» close window

The Question is:

I'M GETTING AN ERROR CODE ON VMS 7.1 AND I DO NOT HAVE A CLUE TO WHAT IT MEANS
AND I CAN'T FIND IT DOCUMENTED ANYWHERE. THE FOLLOWING IS THE ERROR AS IT
 APPEARS ON THE SCREEN:

HALT CODE = 7
MACHINE CHECK WHILE IN PAL MODE
PC=8020

PLEASE, CAN SOMEONE HELP?

The Answer is :

The machine check typically indicates a system hardware error, or
(rarely) a very low-level OpenVMS software (or device driver) error.
This particular error is a machine check encountered by the PALcode.

If this is not a hard failure, reload firmware and apply the available
OpenVMS ECO kits -- in the case of OpenVMS Alpha V7.1, the recommended
approach would be OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-2 and ECOs, or V7.2-1 and ECOs,
or later release. If this is a hardware-related failure, these updates
will (obviously) not remediate the error.

If this is hardware, please contact your hardware support organization.

If you are supporting your own hardware, you will want to request
the assistance of another organization, or you will want to obtain
technical information and diagnostics and troubleshooting information
using the Compaq Assisted Services program.
