Reducing or Redirecting Console Output?

» close window

The Question is:

Is it possible for all output from the console (OPA0) to be sent to a file
rather than a printer? This would include messages sent specifically to OPA0,
other OPCOM messages, DECEvents, boot messages, and any other messages
 displayed on the console (whic
h is more than appears in OPERATOR.LOG). We have a LA30N printer attached to
the console now but at one ribbon per day the cost is becoming prohibitive.

The Answer is :

Devices and critical system functions that direct output specifically
to OPA0: cannot be redirected. Other output and particularly OPCOM
output can be redirected using information in SYLOGICALS.TEMPLATE.

(The copy of SYLOGICALS.TEMPLATE in V7.2 and later contains additional
information of interest for a cluster configuration; your version of
OpenVMS Alpha is no longer supported.)

The two common solutions here are a different printer, or a console
server package. Or both. Some of the console management package
options available are discussed in the OpenVMS FAQ.
